115 S Americas Ave J, El Paso, TX 79907

OVERALL BITES:

Value: Four tacos for only $5.49 of good quality meat and loaded with cheese, you simply can’t beat that! You can also get 6 tacos for a couple more bucks but then the portion would be a little too big for lunch…that’s just me.

Taste: The Tacos de Alambre (which is beef, ham, jalapenos, tomatoes, onion and cheese) were amazing! No fatty pieces and the amount of filling in the tacos was just right! Add to that the salsas from the salsa bar and you could have a different taste with every bite!

Presentation: Food is served on paper plates…which made it feel like you were at a cookout but didn’t feel like a restaurant feel. More like a taco stand which is probably what they were going for. Nonetheless, it didn’t take away from the service and the taste of the food.

Vibe: We arrived right as the lunch hour was ending, 12:30 or so, and it was still pretty busy. The parking lot was full and there were people coming and going. You could tell people enjoy their Tacos Don Cuco.

Accessibility: The location I went to, Americas and the Loop, is under quite a bit of construction so it’s a little difficult to get in and out of. Once you’re in, after someone lets you turn into the shopping center, then you’ll find plenty of parking.

Review – Tacos Don Cuco

I’ve driven by this place quite a few times. Not only this location but several throughout the El Paso area. Today was the day that I had the Tacos Don Cuco experience and they did not disappoint.

When we pulled in it was roughly 12:30 or so and the parking lot was full. When you walk into Tacos Don Cuco you’ll go to the counter where you’ll see a couple of giant TV’s showing the menu. Having never been here before I figured I would go to my regular….Carne Asada Tacos. But that’s not what I ordered. I figure you only live once, right? So I ordered an order of the Tacos de Alambre which includes beef, ham, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions and cheese all cooked together. An order comes with four tacos (see pics above) but for a couple bucks more you can get 6!!! Four was just the right size for me though. Along with the tacos I added a hibiscus tea (an agua de jamaica for those of us in the know).

My partner ordered a Don Cuco Quesadilla (which adds steak and some veggies to a quesadilla) and also a Don Cuco Potato. The Potato was buttered really well and had some steak strips on top along with sauteed onions and it was DELICIOUS!!! If you’re a fan of baked potatoes then you’ll need to try a Don Cuco Potato. Especially with one of the salsas from the salsa bar.

Once you place you’re order you take a number and seat yourself in the spacious dining area. It only took a few minutes for us to get our food. While we waited we decided to fill some plastic containers with salsa. I had an avocado green, a roasted chile green, pico, and a red salsa. Our food was brought out to us pretty quickly but I was a bit disappointed in the paper plates. It could have been that they are going for a food truck feel but I thought it kind of lowered the experience.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have never had Tacos de Alambre from anywhere. Let me tell you, I’ve been missing out!!! I don’t know if it was just Don Cuco or not but these tacos were amazing! They were perfectly flavored and the meat was tender without any gristle. The four tacos was the perfect serving size too!

Let me tell you a bit about the salsas. The red was….SPICY! The avocado green was tasty but mostly avocado without any spice. Could have used a hint of lime. The roasted green chile had a great roasted taste to it but not spicy at all. So if you’re looking for a kick then stick with the red. I started with the red and ended with the others which gave me a little time for the spice to wear off.

After all is said and done Tacos Don Cuco gets 4.5 Bites!!! The food was amazing, the service was good (they did bring out our food rather quickly and cleared our paper plates too), and the salsa bar was also amazing! The one thing, and it’s a small one too, is that the salsa bar area could have been wiped down. Try them out for yourself though and you won’t be disappointed!
