6305 Montana Ave, El Paso, TX 79925
OVERALL BITES:
Value: Lunch buffet for under $10! You simply can’t beat that. There are a handful of dishes to choose from, a salad bar, and also a few desert items. This is one of the best deals I’ve come across in a while.
Taste: Two things stood out in the buffet – the albondigas (meatballs) and the rice pudding. Both were flavored perfectly and left you wanting more!
Presentation: Can’t give too many points here as I served my own plate but I think I did a good job. Judge for yourself in the pic below. The buffet area was small and they were winding down so it looked a bit empty.
Vibe: Not too many people were in the dining area when we arrived but you could tell the people there were regulars. It’s that one diner you go to because they treat you right and they have fair prices.
Accessibility: Very easy to find. They are on the North side of Montana not too far West of Airway. The parking is huge and they have quite a bit dining area.
Review – Elmer’s Family Restaurant
In El Paso once again for work and since I needed a place to review I decided to try Elmer’s Family Restaurant which was right across from the hotel where I was staying. I had driven by it on plenty of occasions and had seen a pretty full parking lot but today it was relatively empty. It was right after lunch time though.
We were able to pick our table and a server greeted us quickly. She took our drink order and brought us menus. She told us about the buffet which we decided to try so we could get a little taste of everything. We walked up to the small buffet line and noticed a handful of favorites. Fajitas, Flautas, albondigas (meatballs), Beans, Enchiladas, a small salad bar and a few desert items. I decided on the flautas, chicken fajitas, beans, and enchiladas. My partner also tried the albondigas.
I took my seat again and tried the beans first. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. They didn’t look like much but they tasted great. I moved onto the potato flautas and they were pretty good. They were perfectly fried and crispy but they lacked a little flavor. I asked for some salsa from our server and she brought out a pretty good size bowl. The salsa was a little more watery than I like but it tasted pretty good. It definitely made a difference on the flautas. Up next were the chicken fajitas. Again, they were very tasty. I had them without tortillas, as I didn’t see them on the buffet line, but I’m sure you could have asked for them. The fajitas had plenty of peppers and onions too which I really enjoy. The enchiladas weren’t much to write about.
Finally, I had the rice pudding. This also didn’t look like much but I was blown away! How is it some of the best rice pudding was found at a local diner at he heart of El Paso!?! If I hadn’t had so much from the other items I would have gone back for more rice pudding. When you go to Elmer’s Family Restaurant, make sure you leave room for desert.
Elmer’s gets 3.5 Bites! The restaurant is a little dated and could use some work. Some of the food needed salt and salsa to make it pop. I loved the chicken fajitas, the albondigas were great, and the rice pudding is one of the best I’ve tasted. At the end of the day, we go to restaurants for the food and Elmer’s Family Restaurant does have good food.
