OVERALL BITES:
Value: The brunch buffet was $14 per person and $6 for kids. With coffee and lemonade it came out to around $50 with a tip for two adults and a child. Might be a little high for a brunch but you can’t go wrong with the variety of food, the quality, and the taste.
Taste: Everything I tried was excellent. The chilaquiles were great, the posole was great, the little pastries were delicious too. What I enjoyed most was the green chile beef with potatoes, the refried beans, and the potatoes with chorizo. Oh, and I can’t forget the fresh flour tortillas!
Presentation: Can’t say too much for presentation since I had the buffet and I served myself (and yes, I did a great job as you can see from the pictures). The buffet area was very well attended though. The staff was constantly cleaning, filling containers, and making sure you had what you wanted.
Vibe: There was live music on this Sunday afternoon which was nice. A gentleman was singing songs with a drum machine and a guitar He had a good voice which made for a pleasant eating experience. The games, Patriots vs. Raiders and one other, was on too.
Accessibility: Cunados Restaurant is on the East side of El Paso. Take Gateway East between Yarbrough and Lomaland. They also have a very tall sign (see picture) which makes it hard to miss.
Review – Cunados Restaurant
It was after church on a Sunday and since we hadn’t had breakfast we decided to get our grub on at Cunados Restaurant on Gateway East just past Yarbrough. I’ve seen the sign many times but had never stopped. You can see how popular Cunados Restaurant is by looking at the parking lot and it was packed! We entered the restaurant and found there were still quite a few empty tables. We were seated immediately and our drink orders were taken.
The server assumed we’d have the brunch since we didn’t get a menu which was fine by me. Menu prices range in the low teens and up. The brunch buffet is $14 per adult and $6 per child. So the prices were pretty similar. Normally I would say this is a big more expensive than I would think for a brunch but once you consider the environment, the variety, and the quality of the food it’s a pretty good deal.
Once we were ready to get our food I had a hard time finding the plates. It turns out they were on the far east side of the buffet line. There was also someone making fresh barbacoa tacos which you could then garnish with your choice of salsas, onions and cilantro. That was a crowd favorite as there were several people waiting on him to get their taco fix.
Just as popular was the menudo. I found myself a bowl and went to the menudo and posole area where I was greeted by a server. He asked if I wanted menudo he would grab it from the back as they were in the process of refilling the container. It was nice to see the staff being proactive. Good thing for me I wanted posole. All the extras (salsas, onions, cilantro, etc) were in the same area which created a bit of a traffic jam. I would have been nice to have these duplicated elsewhere so not everybody was waiting on somebody else to move out of the way.
Finally, there was a big fresh fruit area which also had small shrimp cocktails which were very tasty. Next to the fruit were your normal breakfast items like pancakes, eggs, and also pastries.
After thinking long and hard about this review I can’t find a reason to give them anything than 5 Bites! Yes, this is only the second time I’ve given a restaurant 5 Bites but they did everything right. The food was great, the place looks amazing, the staff is attentive, and even though I was a bit taken aback by the price you have to consider everything you get for that. So, at the end of the day Cunados Restaurant is very deserving of every single Bite!
